About
Julian Netzer is an artist, media designer and lecturer. In 2020, he completed his master degree in New Media at the Berlin University of the Arts.
His artistic work ranges from interactive spatial installations to sculptural pieces that address questions about the human relationship to emerging technologies. His main area of interest is the investigation of machine and human perception and pattern recognition. cv.apophenia(); (2017) is an installation that critically examines the process of computational creativity. Edges of Understanding (2019) is a series of works that spotlights human interpretation of results from machine learning algorithms by making comparisons to the 19th century physician Justinus Kerner's mystified reading of inkblots. Trying since xx/xx/xxxx xx:xx (2020) visualizes in real time the learning process of ML-controlled agents, investigating the moment we begin to perceive human characteristics or behaviors in the digital avatars. The room-sized interactive installation GOTCHA (2020) addresses the difficulties in human-imitating AI algorithms, which increasingly leads to a fading of the distinction between human and machine avatars. His works have been shown at EMAF INIT and Vienna Art Week, among others.
As a freelancer he is mainly designing & writing software for realtime 3d applications (especially mixed reality applications ) and interactive art installations.
Julian Netzer is currently artistic researcher and lecturer at the kunsthochschule weißensee berlin in the visual communication department in the section digital media and part of the research group +dimensions which deals with hybrid teaching spaces.
He lives and works in Berlin.
