About

Julian Netzer is an artist, media designer and lecturer based in Berlin. In 2020, he completed his master's degree in New Media at the Berlin University of the Arts.

His work spans interactive installations, sculptural objects and video pieces that explore the entanglement of human and machine perception — the moments where algorithmic systems mimic or misread human behavior, and where we project meaning onto their outputs.

Early works like cv.apophenia(); (2017) and Edges of Understanding (2019) examine how humans interpret computational processes, while GOTCHA (2020) and Trying since xx/xx/xxxx xx:xx (2020) probe the uncanny threshold where we begin to attribute agency to digital avatars. More recent works expand into broader sociotechnical territory: Blissful (2023) stages a machine confidently narrating cloud shapes it misrecognizes, All Square (2024) places humanoid ML agents in virtual training environments to reflect on simulated labor, and The One Best Way (2025) traces the logic of optimization from Taylorist scientific management to contemporary ML-driven workplace surveillance.

As a freelancer, he develops software for realtime 3D applications, mixed reality experiences and interactive installations. From 2021 to 2025, he was artistic researcher and lecturer at weißensee kunsthochschule berlin and part of the research group +dimensions.

His works have been shown at EMAF INIT, Vienna Art Week, transmediale Vorspiel and Luminafest, among others.

He lives and works in Berlin.
